In the 2005 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, buyers said the following are the most important factors in choosing an agent to assist in the purchase of a home:
41% said the reputation of the real estate agent was the most important factor.
24% said the agent’s knowledge of the neighborhood was the most important factor.
7% said the agent’s association with a particular firm was the most important factor.
4% said professional designations held by the agent was the most important factor.
24% named a variety of other factors.

Buyers were generally very satisified with the skills and expertise of their agent. The following shows the skills and expertise that buyers indicated they were very satisifed:
85% said knowledge of the purchase process
82% said knowledge of the real estate market
80% said people skills
80% said responsiveness
80% said knowledge of the local area

Most buyers have very specific expectations of their real estate professional. First time buyers, along with repeat buyers, ranked help with finding the right home as the most important expectation of their agent. There also was not much difference between first-time and repeat buyers regarding their desire for help with price negotiations and help with paperwork. Repeat buyers were more likely to want assistance in determining what comparable homes sell for, while first-time buyers want their agent to help them determine how much they can afford to spend on a home.
59% want help finding the right home to purchase
10% want help with price negotiations
10% want help with paperwork
9% want help determining what comparable homes sell for
5% want help determining how much the buyer can afford to spend on a home
3% want help finding and arranging for financing
1% want help finding renters for the buyer’s property
